TONY SCOTT

“The Purpose of Life is to discover your gift. The meaning of Life is to give your gift away.”
David Viscott
I had the distinct pleasure and honor to work with Tony Scott while shooting The Taking of Pelham 123. I arrived a month into production, replacing the first photographer, so felt like a fish-out-of-water. As soon as I walked into the stage at Astoria Studios, Tony introduced himself with a big smile and had me sit in front of a portable DVD player to watch an edited scene of the movie. He made me feel immediately at ease and at home. Not to mention that this act alone demonstrated his appreciation and respect for the work of others, and that he understood I needed to be put up to speed. After watching that edited scene I knew exactly what was required of me. Working side by side with him for 10 weeks, I was amazed by the depth of his control of the celluloid medium, and the way he captured action. Not only would he strategically place six cameras around the action, he would direct his six camera crews, via headsets, to change the focal length, angle and composition of the frame, much like a TV director does in a studio booth. He knew exactly what he wanted at all times. But most remarkable of all was his humble and generous character. One moment he was dealing with studio heads or directing A-list actors, another, talking jovially with an old lady that approached him on a street we were shooting. He always greeted you with a quick smile and seemed truly interested in what others had to say. He inspired respect and admiration from all of us working around him. His legacy lives on, not only in the remarkable body of work he left behind, and the millions of lives he touched with his movies, but most importantly, in the way he inspired the artists and professionals that worked with him. I, for one, have been inspired by his talent, and am a better photographer having worked with him. Tony defi nitely had found his meaning in life- to inspire.
